Verify Apple ID Email Scam
This email asks you to verify your Apple ID and is phishing for your log in data. Remember this account can hold credit card information, personal details, photos and more so it is extremely important to keep your data safe. Apple is a popular technology company which can sync your data and apps through your Apple ID log in.
Figure A shows the email in question. It is designed to suit the Apple brand and is mostly text. There is no personal greeting, but they have inserted your email address (in black for privacy reasons) which is a tactic to convince you of its authenticity. The subject line reads “Important Information About Your Apple ID” which is used to attract attention enough to open and read further. The sender is shown as “Apple”, however the email address is in no way associated with the official Apple website and is clearly spam related. This particular email even includes information under “Wondering why you got this email?”, which is fake and misleading and again used to give you confidence in its authenticity. Delete this email if received, clicking any of these links will lead you to a dangerous phishing website.
Figure B is a safely captured screenshot of the phishing website you will land on if any links within the email are clicked. As you can see it is very convincing and you would not think twice when going to log into your Apple account. Be very careful on this page – do not click anywhere and remove the email to avoid the loss of your log in data.
This email can have devastating consequences so we suggest deleting it straight away. If you have fallen for this email contact Apple immediately for advice on the next steps to keep your data safe. If you are ever in doubt with an email asking to update information, contact the vendor directly and, always check the URL of the website you are on.
